Sapa Highland Trek & Homestay — 5 Days / 4 Nights

DAY 1 – HANOI TO SAPA | OVERNIGHT TRAIN OR PRIVATE VEHICLE

Depart Hanoi in the evening by overnight train to Lao Cai, arriving at the Chinese border town at dawn. Transfer by road up the mountain to Sapa — 38 kilometres of switchbacks climbing from 80 metres to 1,600 metres — with the Hoang Lien Son range emerging from the morning cloud above. Check in to your lodge. Afternoon orientation walk around Sapa town and first views down into the Muong Hoa Valley — the great amphitheatre of terraced rice fields. Dinner at a Sapa restaurant: thang co Sapa-style, ca hoi nuong grilled Sapa salmon farmed in cold mountain streams, and ruou tao meo apple wine.

DAY 2 – MUONG HOA VALLEY TREK | LAO CHAI | TA VAN | HOMESTAY

The first full trekking day. Depart Sapa at 8:00 AM and descend into the Muong Hoa Valley on foot through the Black H’mong village of Cat Cat before the path drops into the open rice terrace landscape. Trek 12 kilometres through Y Linh Ho, Lao Chai, and Ta Van — three villages of progressively different ethnic character with architecture, clothing, and language changing with each kilometre. Arrive in Ta Van village mid-afternoon for homestay check-in with a Black H’mong family. A textile workshop with the family matriarch: the indigo dyeing process and the batik wax-resist technique used to create geometric patterns on H’mong fabric. Dinner at the family table: thit lon nuong grilled highland pork, cai xao toi stir-fried greens, and steamed rice from the family’s own terraces.

DAY 3 – TA VAN TO GIANG TA CHAI | RETURN TO SAPA | FANSIPAN BRIEFING

Morning trek continuing south through Giang Ta Chai — a Dao minority village accessible only on foot, its Dao women in distinctive red headdresses. A short visit to a Dao herbal medicine practitioner who maintains the community’s traditional knowledge of medicinal plants. Return to Sapa by vehicle from the valley floor. Afternoon rest and thorough briefing for tomorrow’s Fansipan summit attempt: route, equipment checklist, departure time, and weather conditions. Early dinner and early night.

DAY 4 – FANSIPAN SUMMIT | 3,143 METRES

A 5:00 AM departure for the Fansipan base station. The ascent can be made by cable car to the summit station (25 minutes, the world’s longest three-rope cable car system) followed by a 600-step staircase to the true summit — recommended for those wanting the summit experience without the full physical demand. The trekking route option is a 14-kilometre round trip of 5-7 hours through cloud forest, recommended for experienced trekkers. At the summit: a panoramic view over the Hoang Lien Son range at 3,143 metres — the highest point in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia combined. Descend and return to Sapa by mid-afternoon.

DAY 5 – BAC HA SUNDAY MARKET | RETURN TO HANOI

Transfer to Bac Ha — approximately 2 hours from Sapa — for the Sunday morning market, the largest and most colourful ethnic minority gathering in northern Vietnam. Bac Ha draws Flower H’mong people primarily — distinguished by their extraordinarily vibrant hand-embroidered clothing in every colour simultaneously — alongside Tay, Nung, La Chi, and Phu La minority groups. The livestock market at the back of the compound — buffalo, horses, and pigs traded in a separate enclosure — is a scene entirely unlike anything in lowland Vietnam. Lunch at a Bac Ha restaurant before transfer to Lao Cai for the afternoon train or private vehicle back to Hanoi.
