DAY 1 – HANOI | ARRIVAL & BRIEFING
Arrive in Hanoi and transfer to your boutique hotel in the Old Quarter. Late afternoon gear check and route briefing with your Ha Giang loop guide: maps, waypoints, weather conditions, road conditions, and safety protocols. For those hiring motorbikes, a test ride through quieter streets to calibrate comfort levels before the mountain roads begin. Welcome dinner at a Hanoi Old Quarter restaurant: cold bia hoi, and the kind of pre-departure conversation that adventure groups always fall into.
DAY 2 – HANOI TO HA GIANG CITY | 320KM BY PRIVATE VEHICLE
An early departure from Hanoi by private minibus — the 320-kilometre drive to Ha Giang city takes approximately five hours through the Red River valley and the first foothills of the northern highlands. Arrive in Ha Giang city in the early afternoon. Check in to your hotel and spend the afternoon at the Ha Giang Museum before a riverside dinner of local specialties: thang co horse meat soup, men men steamed corn cake, and ruou ngo corn wine. Final motorbike briefing and route confirmation.
DAY 3 – HA GIANG TO QUAN BA | HEAVEN GATE | 90KM
The loop begins. Mount up at 8:00 AM and ride north out of Ha Giang city as the road immediately begins to climb into the karst landscape. First major stop: Quan Ba Heaven Gate — a high mountain pass where the road crests a ridge and the Fairy Bosom Twin Mountains appear below, two perfectly symmetrical limestone cones rising from the valley floor. Continue to Yen Minh for lunch. Afternoon ride through the karst plateau to Dong Van — the landscape becoming progressively more dramatic. Check in to your guesthouse in Dong Van old quarter, a collection of traditional stone-and-mud-brick houses preserved from the French colonial era. Evening walk through the ancient quarter, lantern-lit stone lanes and a lau hot pot dinner.
DAY 4 – DONG VAN | LUNG CU FLAG TOWER TREK | SUNDAY MARKET
An early morning walk through the Dong Van Sunday market — one of the most authentic ethnic minority markets in Vietnam, drawing Hmong, Dao, Nung, and Lo Lo people from villages across the plateau. Breakfast at a market stall. Mid-morning guided trek to Lung Cu Flag Tower — Vietnam’s northernmost point. The trek passes through Lo Lo Chai village — one of the last remaining Lo Lo minority communities in Vietnam, its stone houses, hand-loomed textiles, and animist spirit shrines representing a culture that has survived on this plateau for centuries. Lunch at the village before the return trek. Afternoon visit to the Hmong Palace of the Vuong Family — the former residence of the Hmong opium king, built by Chinese craftsmen between 1919 and 1928.
DAY 5 – DONG VAN TO MEO VAC | MA PI LENG PASS | NHO QUE RIVER
The defining day of the loop. Ride west toward Meo Vac across Ma Pi Leng Pass — 24 kilometres of road carved into a sheer limestone cliff face by ethnic minority volunteers over 11 years between 1959 and 1965. Stop at the Ma Pi Leng viewpoint for photographs and the vertigo of standing above a 1,000-metre drop to the Nho Que River below — the river running the colour of jade through a canyon so narrow that sunlight reaches the water for only a few hours each day. Continue to Meo Vac for lunch and an afternoon at leisure in the town’s Saturday market. Overnight at a guesthouse with mountain views.
DAY 6 – MEO VAC TO BAO LAC | HA GIANG CITY | OVERNIGHT BUS
Depart Meo Vac and begin the return loop south through Bao Lac — a gentler, more forested section of the plateau through Tay minority villages. Lunch in Bao Lac. Continue south to Ha Giang city in the late afternoon. A final thang co dinner in Ha Giang city before the overnight sleeper bus back to Hanoi.
DAY 7 – HANOI | ARRIVE & DEPART
Arrive back in Hanoi in the early morning. Transfer to your hotel for a shower, rest, and a final Hanoi breakfast before onward travel or international departure.
