DAY 1 – HANOI | ARRIVAL, GEAR CHECK & BRIEFING
Arrive in Hanoi. Afternoon at the tour operator’s base for bike assignment, full mechanical check, riding gear inspection, and a detailed route briefing covering all 10 days: maps, emergency contacts, elevation profiles, fuel stop locations, and the two most critical safety protocols of the northwest — always carry a minimum half-tank of fuel and always be off the mountain roads before dark. Welcome dinner in Hanoi’s Old Quarter.
DAY 2 – HANOI TO MAI CHAU | 135KM
Depart Hanoi at 8:00 AM heading southwest on Highway 6 — the road leaving the city’s flat sprawl behind within an hour and climbing into the limestone hills of Hoa Binh province. Arrive in Muong Dich valley outside Mai Chau by early afternoon: a wide, flat valley of White Thai villages surrounded by karst peaks. Overnight homestay with a White Thai family in a traditional long house: bamboo walls, sleeping mats on elevated platforms, and a communal dinner of Thai specialties — xoi nep sticky rice in bamboo baskets, grilled fish, wild vegetables, and ruou can communal jar wine drunk through bamboo straws by the entire group together.
DAY 3 – MAI CHAU TO MOC CHAU | 85KM
A shorter day — deliberately so, because Moc Chau deserves time. Ride northwest out of Mai Chau on winding mountain roads through forested ridgelines before arriving at the Moc Chau plateau: a high, flat tableland at 1,050 metres supporting tea cultivation, temperate fruit orchards, and dairy farming. Afternoon at leisure in Moc Chau: the tea factory tour, peach and plum orchards, and the enormous buffalo market held twice monthly — the northwest’s most significant agricultural trading event. Overnight in Moc Chau town.
DAY 4 – MOC CHAU TO SON LA | 120KM
Depart Moc Chau and ride west toward Son La — the provincial capital carved into a mountain valley with a hilltop French colonial prison that once held some of Vietnam’s most important revolutionary figures. The riding today passes through increasingly remote territory: fewer tourist services and the particular character of northwest roads — smooth for 20 kilometres, then broken by a landslide section, then a hairpin descent that the map shows as flat. Afternoon visit to the Son La Provincial Museum and the old French prison. Overnight in Son La.
DAY 5 – SON LA TO DIEN BIEN PHU | 175KM
The longest riding day of the trip and one of the most historically significant. Ride west through wild mountain terrain toward the Dien Bien Phu valley — the remote mountain basin where, in 1954, the Viet Minh besieged and destroyed a French garrison of 16,000 troops in a 57-day battle that ended French colonialism in Indochina. Arrive in the late afternoon. A first visit to the battlefield sites in the remaining daylight: the French command bunker of Colonel de Castries, the Vietnamese artillery positions on surrounding hills, and the Dien Bien Phu Cemetery.
DAY 6 – DIEN BIEN PHU | MUSEUM & MINORITY VILLAGES | REST DAY
A rest day from the bike. Morning visit to the Dien Bien Phu Victory Museum — the most comprehensive collection of artefacts and maps from the 1954 battle, including the bicycle transportation system: 20,000 modified bicycles each carrying 200 kg of supplies that supplied the Viet Minh siege army through mountain jungle without a single motorised supply vehicle. An afternoon excursion into surrounding valleys to visit Thai and H’mong minority villages whose lives barely touched by the events that made this valley famous.
DAY 7 – DIEN BIEN PHU TO MUONG LAY | 65KM | THAI HOMESTAY
A short but spectacular riding day north on Highway 12 — a road so quiet and beautiful that it barely appears in Vietnamese travel writing. The route follows the Nam Rom River north through a series of Thai minority valleys before climbing to a ridge and dropping into the Da River gorge above Muong Lay. Overnight in a traditional Thai longhouse homestay above the reservoir: the family’s fishing boats moored below the house, dinner cooked over a wood fire on the open veranda, and the extraordinary silence of a mountain reservoir at night.
DAY 8 – MUONG LAY TO SAPA | 170KM | O QUY HO PASS
The most demanding and most rewarding riding day of the entire northwest loop. Ride north then east onto Highway 32, climbing to the Mu Cang Chai valley. Stop at the Khau Pha Pass viewpoint: 1,500 metres, a 180-degree panorama over the Mu Cang Chai rice terraces below — the most dramatic terrace landscape in Vietnam. Descend into Mu Cang Chai town for lunch and a walk through the terraces. Continue east on Highway 32 — climbing again to O Quy Ho Pass at 2,090 metres, the highest road pass in Vietnam — before a long, fast, exhilarating 24-kilometre descent to the valley floor, then east to Sapa. Arrive exhausted, elated, and ready for the best shower of the trip.
DAY 9 – SAPA | REST & MUONG HOA VALLEY WALK
A final rest day in Sapa. A gentle 2-3 hour walk down into the terraces of the Muong Hoa Valley with the trekking guide — no bikes, no helmets, just walking and looking — before a long afternoon lunch at a Sapa restaurant. Evening packing for the return to Hanoi.
DAY 10 – SAPA TO HANOI | RETURN BY TRAIN OR VEHICLE
Transfer from Sapa to Lao Cai for the afternoon or overnight train back to Hanoi — arriving in the evening or early morning for onward international connections.
