DAY 1 – VIENTIANE | ARRIVAL & CITY EXPLORATION
Arrive in Vientiane and transfer to your boutique hotel in the city centre. A gentle afternoon introduction to the Lao capital: Pha That Luang, the Patuxai Victory Monument at sunset, and a slow walk along the Mekong promenade as Thailand’s lights appear across the water. Dinner at a riverside restaurant: a full introduction to Lao cuisine — laab, tam mak hoong, or lam Luang Prabang-style stew, and khao niao sticky rice in woven bamboo baskets. Briefing on the eight-day itinerary ahead.
DAY 2 – VIENTIANE TO VANG VIENG | TRANSFER & AFTERNOON KAYAK | 160KM
Transfer by private vehicle from Vientiane to Vang Vieng — approximately 3 hours through the flat central Lao plains before the karst landscape erupts around the descent into the Nam Song valley. Check in to your riverside lodge with views of the karst towers. Afternoon: a 2-hour introductory kayak on the Nam Song River — a flat-water paddle through the karst valley serving as both an orientation and an immediate immersion in what makes Vang Vieng’s landscape extraordinary. The towers rise vertically from both banks, their reflections doubling in the still water between.
DAY 3 – VANG VIENG | FULL DAY NAM SONG KAYAK & CAVE SWIM | 22KM
The full kayak day. Depart at 8:00 AM by longtail boat to the put-in point upstream, then paddle 22 kilometres downstream. First stop: Tham Chang cave, entered through a natural arch at river level — a deep, cool swim through the cave’s inner chamber. Continue paddling. Second stop: the Blue Lagoon — a pool of extraordinary turquoise water fed by an underground spring at constant 21°C. Lunch at a riverside village restaurant. Continue downstream through the afternoon as the valley widens approaching Vang Vieng town. Dinner at a riverside restaurant: ping kai grilled chicken, tam mak hoong, and a well-earned cold Beerlao.
DAY 4 – VANG VIENG | MOUNTAIN BIKE & ZIP-LINE | 45KM CYCLING
A non-water day — the bikes come out. Depart at 8:00 AM on mountain bikes heading east into farmland and village tracks between the karst towers. Mid-morning stop at a traditional Lao weaving village where handmade silk and cotton textiles are produced on wooden looms. Continue cycling to the zip-line station north of Vang Vieng: a canopy zip-line system running through primary forest, the final platform delivering a view of the entire Vang Vieng karst basin. Cycle back to the lodge through the afternoon, taking the opposite bank of the Nam Song for a different perspective.
DAY 5 – VANG VIENG TO NONG KHIAW | TRANSFER & VILLAGE WALK | 150KM
Transfer by private vehicle from Vang Vieng north to Nong Khiaw — approximately 4 hours through forested hills. Nong Khiaw is a small village on the Nam Ou River, surrounded by dramatic karst cliffs — largely unknown to mass tourism and absolutely known to the adventure travel community for extraordinary scenery, genuine quiet, and a pace of life that makes Vang Vieng seem like a city. Afternoon: a guided village walk through Nong Khiaw and across the suspension bridge to a small Hmong community farming the river terrace below the cliffs. Dinner at a riverside restaurant: the best or lam Luang Prabang stew on the route.
DAY 6 – NONG KHIAW TO LUANG PRABANG | NAM OU RIVER KAYAK | 60KM
Put in on the Nam Ou River at the Nong Khiaw bridge at 8:00 AM and paddle 60 kilometres downstream to Luang Prabang — a full day through the most spectacular gorge scenery of the entire trip. The Nam Ou above Luang Prabang runs between 300-metre limestone cliffs, the walls closing to 50 metres in the narrowest sections. Lunch stop at a riverside village midway. Continue paddling as the cliffs gradually give way to the lower hills of the Luang Prabang approach — the Nam Ou joining the Mekong at the town’s northern tip, the temple rooflines of the UNESCO Old Town visible through the trees. Arrive at the Luang Prabang town pier by late afternoon. Dinner at one of the town’s celebrated riverside restaurants.
DAY 7 – LUANG PRABANG | JUNGLE TREK & KUANG SI WATERFALL
Morning: a guided jungle trek in the hills above Luang Prabang’s old town — a 3-hour loop through secondary forest with a local wildlife guide, looking for langur primates in the canopy, identifying medicinal plants, and finding a viewpoint above the Mekong confluence. Return to the town for breakfast at a riverside cafe before visiting Wat Xieng Thong — the most beautiful Buddhist temple in Laos. Afternoon transfer to Kuang Si Waterfall: tiered turquoise pools in the jungle, fed by a waterfall dropping 50 metres through limestone formations. Return to Luang Prabang for a farewell group dinner at the best restaurant in the Old Town.
DAY 8 – LUANG PRABANG | DEPARTURE
A final Luang Prabang morning — the tak bat ceremony at dawn if desired, a last coffee on the Mekong promenade — before transfer to Luang Prabang International Airport for your onward flight to Vientiane, Bangkok, or home.
