Mekong Slow Boat: Laos River Journey — 6 Days / 5 Nights

DAY 1 – LUANG PRABANG | TOWN EXPLORATION & PRE-DEPARTURE

Arrive in Luang Prabang — the UNESCO-listed former royal capital of Laos, a narrow peninsula between the Mekong and the Nam Khan rivers. The afternoon is devoted to the town itself: the Royal Palace Museum, the gilded interior of Wat Xieng Thong, and a sunset walk up Phou Si Hill for a panoramic view of the river bending around the town. Evening briefing from your river guide on the two-day slow boat journey ahead. Dinner at a riverside restaurant: Lao-French cuisine, the legacy of a colonial era that Luang Prabang wears more gracefully than almost anywhere else in the region.

DAY 2 – LUANG PRABANG | TAK BAT & PAK OU CAVES | EMBARKATION | PAK BENG

Rise at 5:30 AM for the tak bat — the daily alms-giving procession in which hundreds of monks walk in silence through the main street. Breakfast at a riverside cafe, then embark the Luang Say boutique slow boat at the Luang Prabang pier. The vessel departs upstream on the Mekong at 9:00 AM. First stop within the hour: Pak Ou Caves, two riverside caverns carved into the limestone cliff face, housing thousands of gold and lacquered Buddha figures left by pilgrims over centuries. Continue upstream as the river narrows and the jungle drops directly to the waterline on both sides. Arrive in Pak Beng — the only town on the two-day journey — as the sun drops. Overnight at Luang Say Lodge overlooking the river.

DAY 3 – PAK BENG TO HUAY XAI | LANTEN VILLAGE | BORDER CROSSING

Depart Pak Beng before 8:00 AM for the second and final day on the river. Midmorning stop at a Lanten minority village on the riverbank — a community whose traditional indigo-dyed clothing, handmade paper, and animist spirit house shrines represent a way of life almost entirely untouched by outside influence. Continue upstream through the afternoon as the river approaches the Thai border. Arrive at Huay Xai in the late afternoon and disembark. Immigration formalities at the Lao border post, then transfer across the Mekong-Thailand Friendship Bridge to Chiang Khong on the Thai bank.

DAYS 4–5 – CHIANG MAI | TEMPLE TRAIL & HIGHLAND EXPLORATION

Two nights in Chiang Mai — Thailand’s northern capital of ancient moated temples, night markets, and mountain excursions. A guided temple trail through the walled Old City: Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang, and Wat Suan Dok. Day 5: an excursion into the mountains north of Chiang Mai — Doi Inthanon National Park, Thailand’s highest peak, with cloud forest trails and hill tribe villages at 2,500 metres above sea level.

DAY 6 – CHIANG MAI | DEPARTURE

Transfer to Chiang Mai International Airport for your onward flight — to Bangkok, home, or continuing south to Phuket or Ko Samui.
